More glass to come...

Thu Jun 25, 2009, 3:02 PM
So I'm in the middle of making a stained glass angel based on a Melozzo Da Forli's piece. I think its turning out well so far. I haven't been able to devote much time to stained glass lately, because the summer is keeping me outside and busy. But I am looking forward to Saturday, because I have a potential commission coming up and I need to make up a set of prototypes. So I'm going to the hot glass shop to blow for a few hours on Saturday - yay! Looking forward to working with a new assistant as well.

I am a glass artist and I walk a fine line. I work with a fickle medium. Glass exists between two polar extremes it seems. Consider the awe struck face that walks into a church and becomes mesmerized by the symphony of light that erupts from the windows. Then consider the other feeling of "awwww" that occurs when your favorite glass falls from the cabinet and shatters into pieces. One one hand you have the subtle sensual curves of blown glass, and on the other, the sharp discordant anger of a broken shard.

I said that I walk a fine line, and I do. Anyone who has run a score line or tried shaping molten glass knows that a successful piece is equal parts craftsmanship, skill and the favorable grin of the Glass Gods. I am happy with a piece that I'm working on when the medium behaves like I want or expect it to and the piece that I have in my minds eye becomes material. I work with glass, not in it.

I love experimenting with cold, warm and hot glass and thinking of new ways to get what I see in my mind to become real.

Glass is my muse and the source of my greatest frustration. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

You're incredible, wonderful artist ^^ I value and love glass more than any precious stone and there are few true gems in your gallery...so it's a watch, of course :)

And this is why, Mother Earth, I wept inwardly for thee at the moment of the immense parade called Time: the clowns were passing, and everybody knows that inside, somwhere, their hearts are broken.

Wow - thanks for all the kind words. Having someone appreciate your work is the best compliment I can receive. Glass IS a great medium and a blast to work in.

 No problem...your work invites and deserves appreciation :)
Also, expect a feature in my journal sometime in near future (I don't update journals regularly, but I'll let you know)...great art deserve any support :)
And as for glass, it is incredible and inviting medium I wanted to try working with it for half of my life...unfortunately, it's not possible, but at least I can admire and enjoy brilliant works of others and to be said again, seeing your gallery was a pleasure ^^
